Giving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children every chance to reach their potential and achieve success is at the heart of a range of education scholarships, events, competitions and support programs offered by governments and charitable trusts.

Scholarships

The Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Foundation (QATSIF) is a charitable trust that runs a Queensland Certificate of Education Scholarship Program to increase the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students staying on to complete Years 11 and 12.

QATSIF funds successful schools which then provide scholarships to individual students. More than 300 Queensland secondary schools have administered scholarships to more than 8,700 students since the program’s inception in 2010.

The next round of scholarship applications open on 19 June 2019. Eligible parents and carers of students in Years 10 and 11 need to speak with their schools about applying for their child and what the scholarship funding covers | LEARN MORE

Indigenous Languages Grants 

Queensland organisations, including School Parent Associations and approved kindergarten program providers, can now apply for in $100,000 worth of Queensland Government Indigenous Languages Grants.

Grants can be used to support the delivery of activities that nurture and protect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages and dialects.

Student Competitions

QATSIF Creative Arts

Budding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and creators in Years 7-12 are being encouraged to create an artwork, song, video or creative piece that responds to one of two themes:

  • 2019 Reconciliation Week – Grounded in truth, walk together with courage; or
  • 2019 NAIDOC Week theme – Voice. Treaty. Truth. Let’s work together for a shared future.

NAIDOC Week 

The National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week (7-14 July) is a time when everyone can celebrate the culture and contributions of the nation’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
